Aims and Fit of Module

This module runs across two semesters.  It builds on the work that they have done at Level 4 in their Introduction to Post-production module.  The module provides an opportunity to the editor to explore their craft by understanding the demands made on them as they edit short sequences and short films. 



Specifically, the module is designed to:


Give student editors a greater understanding of the theories and principles of editing fiction 



Enable student editors to experience a range of editing techniques and processes



Help student editors increase their skill levels and work professionally in order to achieve their creative vision



Enable student editors to work with directors



 Further enable student editors to demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on their decision making and place it within a historical context



Gain an understanding of editor contracts, fees, negotiations etc. so that they can conduct themselves at a professional level

Learning outcomes

A	Discuss, analyse and critique films and television, understanding the practice of editing
B Successfully collaborate and communicate with the director in order to realise a creative vision in the offline process
C Effectively translate a script into edit decisions by using a number of editing techniques in the creation of meaning
D Use film language to communicate meaning to audiences
E Work collaboratively with post production colleagues

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components (seminars and practical workshops in the lab).

The seminars will provide the opportunity to examine films and learn how the editing process contributes to visual storytelling.


The practical workshops will focus on the actual process of editing.
