Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to provide students with a rich understanding of core concepts, principles and theories in organisational behaviour, human resources management and financial management. The module starts by teaching students about organisational psychology, which is the science of human behaviour in the context of organizations and individuals in the workplace. Students will learn about how an understanding of psychology can contribute to an organization's success by improving the performance, motivation, job satisfaction, and overall health and well-being of its employees. Then, students will study human resources management, and how the effective planning, recruitment, training and development, and remuneration of the workforce contributes to the maximization of employee performance and the delivery of an employer's strategic objectives. The module then focuses on financial management and how the efficient and effective management of money enables an organisation to meet its objectives and goals. Together, the module provides students with a comprehensive education and training in fundamental managerial techniques, procedures and practices needed for the effective management of organisations. In so doing, this module prepares students for graduate careers in business, and builds the potential for students to quickly rise to management positions.

Learning outcomes

A Comment upon how psychological theory and practice is used by organisations to understand employee behaviour, attitudes and well-being, and how these can be improved through recruitment, training and management practices and systems.
B Identify the fundamental concepts, principles, and theories of human resources management, and how these can be applied to analyse and solve real-world problems in the workplace.
C Assess the sources, uses and management of finance and the use of accounting for planning, control, decision-making and managing financial risk.
D Demonstrate skills in reflection on the relationship between theory and professional practice.

Method of teaching and learning

This module is carried out in three stages. Firstly, initial classroom teaching and learning, which usually takes place over three weeks at the start of the summer period on campus. This normally takes the form of 6 hours of seminars and 2 hours of tutorial each of the three weeks. At the end of this phase, students typically complete their Group Case Study assessment. Secondly, an industrial Field Study Placement, which is full-time and usually lasts for four weeks. This takes place in a company normally immediately after the learning and teaching first stage. The companies are all approved by XJTLU in advance. Each company supplies a mentor and trainer for students on the Placement. Mentors and trainers provide structured input and industry-related training throughout the Placement, for a minimum of 15 hours of tutorial input. During the Placement, students keep regular learning and experience logs, which provide evidence for their assessment portfolio. The third stage follows the Placement and is when students complete their assessment portfolio.
