To provide students with an understanding of project management and its principles in a contemporary project environment, as well as the strategies to achieve a successful project management outcome.
Learning outcomes 
A. Understand the importance of project management and its relationship to other disciplines.

B. Relate both theoretical and practical perspectives to project management.

C. Establish an understanding of the components and processes in the project management discipline.

D. Have knowledge of the major project management methodologies.

E. Apply a range of techniques to determine, document and refine project goals, performance requirements, deliverables, constraints and risks as well as project schedule, resource budgeting and quality in the lifecycle of a project.

F. Evaluate risk and gain and understanding of the approaches to risk management and contingency planning.

G. Apply project management software tools to project planning and execution.
Method of teaching and learning 
A combination of lectures, tutorials and computer laboratory work
• Principles of project management;

• Project management methodologies, project scope activities and work breakdown structures; the manager’s role;

• Project planning processes: Managing the schedule, costs, people, quality and risks; time and cost management;

• Introduction to the software project planning tools: Building schedules, assigning tasks and resources, managing budgets;

• Project control and reporting, quality and risk management;

• Department-specific project programme: e.g. portfolios, HR and resource management;

professional and ethical responsibilities and the ethics of research; an examination of the issues specific to different discipline areas
