Academic Year: 2019/20
Semester: SEM1
Originating Department: Architecture and Design
Pre-requisites: N/A
As the fundamental skill and knowledge of industrial design, 2D expression, including hand sketching and digital rendering, plays an important role for the students to express and develop their design ideas. In this module, the students will learn skills of manual sketching and rendering. The outcomes from this module will continuously influence many other modules and design projects after it, especially studio modules.
Learning outcomes
A. Identify the perspective rules and correctly create perspective and side view drawings of industrial design products

B. Draw shadings for a product and create az realistic three-dimensional effect using a pencil

C. Flexibly apply colour pencils, pastels and markers to colour a product

D. Perform sketching techniques to indicate the features of a product

Method of teaching and learning
This module will be delivered through lectures followed by demonstrations, briefings, tutorials and practice. The practice consists of small sketching tasks during which instructors and tutors will provide tutorials as well as feedback.

This is a half-semester module. In the beginning, the students will be given a brief introduction about 2D expression/manual sketching in industrial design and the rules of perspective/side view drawings. After that, the students will learn how to make the shading to the drawing and at last the students will learn how to use several tools to do the rendering for the drawing. In the midterm assignment, the students need to submit a drawing to show their skills in perspective sketching and pencil shading. In the final assignment, the students need to submit a work which is not only correct in perspective/side view, but also realistic to reflect the shape, colour and texture of the products, combined with appropriate texture.
