Aims
The module aims to familiarize students with designs, designers and stylistic movements that played an important role in the historical development of industrial design. Also it aids them in recognizing how social-cultural and economical factors influenced the development of the industrial design. This knowledge helps them to understand how historically grown phenomena continue to be of importance in the current visual, professional and societal context designers are working in. It is the first module in the programme that introduces students to a cultural perspective.
Learning outcomes 
A. Recall, identify and explain important historical factors in the development of industrial design.

B. Recall, identify and describe famous figures, movements, styles and designs in the history of industrial design.

C. Find and use multiple sources and media to study the history of industrial design.

D. Compile and present historical information about industrial design and the context in which it developed, for the purpose of design practice.

Method of teaching and learning 
This module is delivered in a seminar style if student numbers permit, otherwise in a lecture setting. Students will study different eras and movements of design history. They will learn how to find and use design historical information, and will receive small writing, reading and presentation assignments. Larger class sizes may be dealt with by handing out group assignments and requiring greater detail in presentations from student groups. Some sessions on this module with be delivered by Language Centre tutors, with the aim of assisting students with language/study skills requirements for the module. Students will also be provided with online language/study skills support to help them engage with module content.
Syllabus 
During the course of this seminar/lecture module, students are introduced, through lectures, tutorials, guided reading and writing, and through presentations to key movements and styles of the history of design such as: Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, Modernism, Futurism, Art Deco, de Stijl, Bauhaus, Constructivism, Streamlining, International Style, Pop Art, Minimalism, High-tech, Postmodernism. Also they read texts concerning socio-cultural and economical factors that influenced design history.
