This two-semester studio module aims to offer students a context in which to develop a proposal for a design project through interaction with one or more supervisors, and then complete the problem analysis, design research, conceptualization, design development, and design production. In the first semester an emphasis on design research, problem formulation, and conceptualization is encouraged, while in the second semester an emphasis on design production, testing, and evaluation is encouraged. Students are encouraged to develop design projects based on their interests and professional goals. Students are expected to aim for an integration of all knowledge, insights, and skills gained while studying on this programme as well as present results at the highest standards of enquiry and production in all aspects of this final year project.

A. Use appropriate user research methods to identify an existing problem/need

B. Assess related literatures and solutions to develop and strengthen the research preposition

C. Develop a plausible design solution to the proposed research problem

D. Assess design solutions with usability testing or engineering analysis and identify their applicability and limits
E. Produce formal documents that adhere to the rigour and structure of a scientific, engineering, or design research report

Method of teaching and learning 
This is a studio module. Under tutorial supervision, and enhanced by lectures and other inputs of academic staff, students formulate and address a design brief individually. Students are required to engage in user-centred research and design. In addition to presenting the design rationale and work to a series of formal design reviews, students are expected to have intensive interactions with their supervisors to continuously improve their research and design work Students will conduct their own research into relevant materials, technologies, and precedents - for discussion and development in the advisory meetings. Students are encouraged to utilise hand visualisation and CAD tools and to develop a self-paced work ethic of which studio tutorials and design reviews are key elements. The level of quality achieved in the students' design outcomes is as important as demonstrably creative, rigorous, and self-critical design development processes.

Some sessions on this module will be delivered by Language Centre tutors, with the aim of assisting students with language/study skills requirements for the module. Students will also be provided with online language/study skills support to help them engage with module content.

In this two-semester module students are expected to demonstrate design research, proposal formulation, conceptualization, design, and presentation skills taught in this programme, applying, as appropriate, their insights into at least some of the following areas: user research, ergonomics; model making; engineering analysis, materials and manufacturing selection, robust design, sustainable design, business strategy, cultural theory, expert interviews, design process documentation, industrial liaison, literature research, survey and questionnaire research, design presentation, and design report writing.
