In order to fundamentally change the ways products are developed, new approaches are needed that cut across disciplinary boundaries to provide a means for solving complex problems. This module will present state-of-the-art methods and tools for industrial design under the transdisciplinary framework.

The purpose of studying design processes, activities, and tools is to understand the features of design and development that are common across all disciplines. This module presents an ontology of design activities common across disciplines, tools to assist designers with each activity, and examples drawn from a variety of disciplines. This module covers the activities of the design process including problem formulation, problem decomposition, conceptual design, analysis of design solutions, decoupling, parameter setting, and optimization. This module provides the skills necessary for individuals or groups of designers to apply a variety of state-of-the-art design tools to projects. Students will be taught how to analyze design processes, to select or create appropriate tools for improving product development, to critique their use, and to work together on group projects.

The objectives of this module are to provide students with 1) a broad background in design research and tools 2) enabling them to create their own guidelines for selecting the most appropriate tools and methods for their own research or work, and 3) an opportunity to think critically about the implementation of design methods and research in technology development and academic research.
