Aims and Fit of Module

This module looks at Sino-European relations from a critical perspective, asking students to think beyond mainstream IR theories. Students will initially explore historical narratives to understand the way Sino-European relations are framed. The module then focuses on EU-China relations, critically reflecting on converging and diverging interests, policies and political outcomes and instruments within the framework of the EU-China strategic partnership. Finally, students will ponder the future of Sino-European relations.

Learning outcomes

A	Identify the main historical events that have shaped Sino-European relations
B Understand the points of convergence and divergence between China and the EU and its member-states
C Critically assess the EU-China strategic partnership
D Combine different theoretical approaches, both mainstream and non-mainstream, to better understand Sino-European relations
E Assess and critique the different historical narratives in the Sino-European relationship
F Use appropriate research skills
G Produce academic writing which is appropriate for the discipline

Method of teaching and learning

The module is based on a combination of lectures, seminars, and private study with the potential of fieldtrips to major Chinese cities such as Shanghai and Beijing.
