To provide a comprehensive coverage of the underlying theory, design techniques and analytical tools of wireless communication systems and equip students with basic skills required to work on the future Internet of Things systems.
Learning outcomes 
A. Understand the fundamental operating principles of wireless communication, and the services available from different radio systems.

B. Understand the networking architectures and protocols applied in different radio systems.

C. Understand the design and deployment issues of radio communication systems.

D. Be able to deploy and optimize an existing system for real life applications.

E. Appreciate that the international standardizations are often driven by the Intellectual Property Right (IPR) strategies of global giants.
Method of teaching and learning 
This module will be delivered by a combination of formal lectures and supervise lab practicals. Lectures will introduce students to the theoretical contents and design techniques in radio communications, while computer practicals will allow students to practice their skills required in the module.
With three hours lecture in each week, the syllabus is designed as follows.

1. Introductions of wireless communication systems

2. Contention-based Random Access

3. Multiple Division Access

Week 3

4. Network protocols (OSI model)

5. Cellular Systems (GSM, WCDMA, LTE, Beyond 4G…)

Week 4

6. WLAN (IEEE802.11 families)

Week 5

7. Sensor networks ( IEEE802.15.4 ZigBee, LPWAN, Bluetooth 5.0 BLE etc.) (2 weeks)

8. Ad hoc networks (Routing protocols)

9. Satellite Systems
