1. To provide a hands-on introduction to wireless sensor networking including protocols and architectures for wireless sensor network design.

2. To introduce wireless network hardware and software, wireless sensor network routing and MAC protocols.

3. To introduce focused topics for wireless sensor networks such as time synchronization, localisation, memory, and topology management.

4. To discuss research/newer topics such as body/medical sensor networks, robotic sensor networks, multimedia sensor networks, etc.
Learning outcomes 
A. Design communication protocols on the link and networking layers for wireless sensor networks.

B. Be familiar with operating systems and programming languages for wireless sensor nodes/networks

C. Be familiar with architectures, functions and performance of wireless sensor network systems and platforms

D. Design and analyse the specific requirements for applications in wireless sensor networks regarding energy supply, memory, processing and transmission capacity, etc.

E. Program wireless sensor networks/nodes.

F. Develop wireless sensor network applications.
Method of teaching and learning 
Lectures: Students will be expected to attend formal lectures in a typical week. Formal lectures will be used to introduce students to the concepts and methods covered by the module.

Tutorials: Supporting labs/tutorials/demos are held each week in which students work under staff guidance on problem sets designed to reinforce understanding of the lecture material with the possibility of immediate feedback.

Private study: In a typical week students will be expected to devote approximately 6 hours of unsupervised time to private study; private study will provide time for reflection and understanding of lecture materials, background reading and completion of the assessment tasks.

Assessments: Continuous assessments will be used to test to the extent of theoretical ideas grasped.

A final examination at the end of the module will assess the academic achievement of students.

1. Introduction to wireless sensor networks, architectures and technologies. (2 lecture hours)

2. Wireless sensor network platforms: hardware and software. (4 lecture hours)

3. Communication architecture and protocols for wireless sensor networks (e.g. MAC, link, routing). (4 lecture hours)

4. Sensor data acquisition, processing, handling and energy management. (4 lecture hours)

5. Signal processing, target localisation and tracking, self-organisation, etc. (4 lecture hours)

6. Modelling and simulation of wireless sensor networks. (4 lecture hours)

7. Applications and case studies (e.g. health, environmental monitoring, smart home). (4 lecture hours)
