Aims and Fit of Module

This module is intended for students with no pre-existing Japanese language ability. The module aims to bring students to an exit level of Japanese language proficiency that is equivalent to CEFR A1+ level.


All the Japanese modules have been developed taking into account the QAA benchmark statements for a full or minor component in a language. QAA benchmark statements relate to the language component comprising at least one-third of the study total, resulting in students at the end of the relevant degree programme being at level C1. These Japanese modules make up less than one third of study and so the realistic minimum that would be achieved for a student starting at a beginner level in year 1 is CEFR B2, though students with some initial knowledge would be at C1.

Learning outcomes

A	Demonstrate understanding of a speaker of the target language if they speak very slowly and clearly about simple everyday topics

B	Demonstrate understanding of very short, simple texts in the target language, when allowed to read very slowly

C	Use the target language to provide simple information orally, ask and answer simple questions, and respond to simple statements on very familiar topics

D	Use the target language to write simple sentences about themselves, including where they live and what they do 

Method of teaching and learning

This module takes a communicative approach to language teaching, and involves a high level of interaction between teacher and students. Teaching and assessment will revolve around the setting and completion of specified language tasks. 


This module includes 4*2 hour seminars plus 2 hours of tutorials per week. Students will have 8 hours per week of integrated skills class, covering reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The tutorial sessions will be designed to support student learning in and after class.
