Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to facilitate foundation-level students’ adaptation to UK Higher Education. Using a variety of modern and contemporary texts, the module stimulates English language learning and develops understanding of modern British culture and society.  
1. To introduce students to key themes in English literature and culture.
2. Enhance students’ reading, writing and listening skills.
3. To develop students’ confidence in the classroom.
4. To equip students with a critical vocabulary for understanding texts and expressing their ideas.
5. To introduce students to a range of different literary and cultural forms.
6. To expose students to near-real-world English speech.
7. To provide an engaging academic context for developing critical thinking.

Learning outcomes

A. Read, understand and respond to a range of literary and cultural texts, recognizing the ways in which texts achieve their effects. 
B. Develop skills in close reading and develop a personal response to a text.
C. Develop writing skills that enable the student to express a clear argument or thesis statement.
D. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of English literature and culture.
E. Produce academic writing at CEFR B2 level.

Method of teaching and learning

This module is delivered by Language Centre in conjunction with English, Culture and Communication.
Departmental staff from English, Culture and Communication deliver lectures that introduce students to relevant knowledge of cultural forms and themes.
Language Centre staff deliver seminars that develop critical discussions about the text and offer students the opportunity to develop their English speaking and writing skills. Language Centre staff create and mark both assessments.
