Aims and Fit of Module

The module presents a range of themes related to the concept of ’The City’ with the aims of: (1) helping students to understand issues affecting the cities they live in today and to think about the future development of urban societies (2) promoting interdisciplinary thinking by making connections between themes.

Learning outcomes

A.	Demonstrate understanding of some of the key issues of urbanization and urban culture past,  present and future
B. Compare and contrast the representation of urban societies and cultures in a range of media
C. Apply concepts related to cities and urban culture to their local environment
D. Make connections between different themes presented in the module as they relate to cities
E. Produce academic language at CEFR B2 level

Method of teaching and learning

Each week is divided into 2x2 hour classes: 
Class 1: The first class is usually the seminar which is delivered by the Language Centre. It prepares students linguistically, with a focus on vocabulary and activating prior knowledge of the topic. It may also run activities to consolidate and apply the knowledge which was learnt in the preceding week.
Class 2: The second class is typically when the subject content will be delivered by a lecturer from either the department of English, the department of Urban Planning and Design (UPD), or the School of Film and Television Arts (SOFTA).
