This module is part of the Teaching Chinese as an International Language pathway that students can study in years 3 and 4 on the BA China Studies degree. The module provides students with the skills that will be used in the teaching practice module in the final year.

This module aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of concepts in language teaching; and equip them to develop their own teaching pedagogy through examining the assumptions and guiding principles underpinning the various approaches and methods in language teaching. The module also covers basic principles of curriculum design in language education, and discusses effective ways to teach the four language skills, as well as grammar and vocabulary.
Learning outcomes 
A Critically analyse pedagogic rationales for teaching various aspects of Mandarin Chinese.

B Explain and apply principles governing material and curriculum development.

C Critically discuss key concepts in teaching methodologies in a national/international environment.

Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching uses a combination of teacher led seminars followed by student led discussions about the seminar topic and the observations students have held. The first half of seminars introduce students to relevant knowledge of teaching practice(s), which are then discussed and analysed further in the second half of seminars, which function more as discussion groups relating to the observations/weekly topics.

The portfolio task will be based around the changing assumptions and ideas of teaching through the course. It will be designed to allow students to work through the weeks to develop their critical awareness of teaching practices based on the course content and observations.
Topics may include:

Week 1: The General Principles of Foreign /Second Language Teaching. Myths and assumptions of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages

Week 2: Language Teaching Methodology – From Grammar Translation to Communicative

Week 3: Observations, observing, and observations tools

Week 4: Communicative & Task Based Learning Language Teaching. Promoting active language learning and styles of learning vs types of learner.

Week 5: Curriculum Design for Chinese courses (one-to-one vs other class types)

Week 6: Lesson Planning and Materials Development.

Week 7: Language Teaching and Language Testing.

Week 8: Teaching Speaking & Listening: From Theory to Practice.

Week 9: Teaching Reading: From Theory to Practice.

Week 10: Teaching Writing: From Theory to Practice.

Week 11: Teaching and technology – going forward

Week 12: Teaching Vocabulary: From Theory to Practice.

Week 13: Teaching Grammar: From Theory to Practice.
