Aims and Fit of Module

This module is compulsory for postgraduate students admitted on the condition of attending the Pre-sessional English course. After completing the Pre-sessional, they must register for and pass this module. Programme Directors may also designate this course as compulsory for students on their programme. It is optional for other Postgraduate students.
The main aims of this module are to:
a) deepen students’ understanding of academic English genres and stylistic conventions
b) develop critical thinking and critical reading skills.
c) provide students with the ability to locate and critique sources
d) teach students to paraphrase and summarise
e) teach students the method of synthesising sources
f) provide students with the language and concepts necessary to write a literature review
g) provide students with the language and concepts necessary to create a research proposal
h) equip students with the skills to deliver a presentation relevant to their field of study

A	Source and evaluate research to be used in written tasks
B Summarise and paraphrase material from sources
C Understand the purpose of and be able to use discipline-specific referencing systems
D Write a literature review in academic style
E Understand the content and structure of a research proposal

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be offered in Semester 1 of the Academic Year.
The teaching sessions are 2 2-hour seminars each week for 12 weeks. As an hours-based module, students may miss no more than 4 seminars in order to be permitted to submit their summative assessment portfolio.
Students will receive 27 hours of guided self-study to reinforce the instruction. This will include completion of quizzes and tasks on ICE, and using the process-writing approach of re-drafting and editing to prepare the portfolio assessment.
Throughout this module, tutors will use a variety of communicative language teaching/learning strategies to reach different types of learners.
Significant homework and self-study are required for this course.
