Aims and Fit of Module

This module is optional and open to all postgraduate students. Programme Directors may also designate this course as compulsory for students on their programme.


The main aim of this module is to examine and practice a range of general academic oral communication skills in an English-medium environment.



Learning outcomes

A. Understand and use appropriate academic skills, language, style, and structure for general academic communications
B. Participate in a formal discussion with a degree of spontaneity

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be offered in Semester 1 of the Academic Year.
The teaching sessions are 1 2-hour seminar each week for 9 weeks, with additional self-study.
As an hours-based module, students may miss no more than 4 class hours in order to be permitted to submit their summative assessment portfolio.
Throughout this module, tutors will use a variety of communicative language teaching/learning strategies to reach different types of learners.
