The aim of the module is to provide students with a thorough grounding in contemporary logistics operations and transportation. Specific topics include intermodal operations, transportation selection, warehousing and distribution management, third-party logistics (3PLs), reverse and green logistics services, the concept of adding value in logistics and optimising logistics operations, newly emerging technologies used in logistics field.
Learning outcomes 
A. Critically understand the role and importance of logistics in competitive business performance.

B. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding the various transportation and warehouse models.

C. Understand and design the logistics network.

D. Demonstrate an in-depth understand the importance of green logistics and the impact to the environment and business sustainability.

E. Identify and apply methods and techniques for improving logistics efficiency.

Method of teaching and learning 
A wide range of textbooks are suggested as supplementary reading and video cases are used to support the lecture material.

References to journal articles will expose students to current developments and applications as well as providing a critical view of the concepts covered.

Use of best-practice websites will be utilised to further expose students to practical case studies.

Case studies will be used to support the teaching and learning;

Practical sessions will be held to use planning and analysis tools.

Field trips and studies will be used to expose students to real logistics operations. Should the University decide to cancel or postpone the field trip due to unforeseen environmental and/or political circumstances, the Department will either plan an appropriate substitute activity to meet the intended learning outcomes of the trip or make necessary arrangements to organise the trip at a later time, as appropriate.

Group works will be used to engage students’ corporative learning, increase individual achievement, and stimulate collaboration and communication.

Logistics and transportation

Transportation means - air, road, sea, pipeline, rail, inland waterways. Selection criteria - types of cost analysis, Intermodal operations.

Distribution management - strategies, cost modelling, logistics partnerships, measures of logistics performance, facilities location, computer-based planners.

Warehousing - storage location, cross-docking, containerisation, packaging and palletisation, the wider role of warehouses.

The concept of 3rd party logistics (3PL) and how 3PL providers add value.

The current status and development trend of logistics networks in China and Asia Pacific will be discussed.

Green-logistics and supply chain sustainability

Logistics planning along with environmental policies, best practice in reducing the environmental problems associated with freight, transport and warehousing activities, reverse logistics activities for product lifecycle management
