Aims
The module aims to introduce students to the theoretical perspectives, roles, and practical activities associated with the management science in manufacturing operations both in contemporary organizations and in the historical context. Through the module learning, student should develop their awareness and in-depth understanding of fundamental supply chain management, inventory management, production scheduling, lean operation and maintenance.
Learning outcomes 
A. Identify and explain the underlying behavior of manufacturing firms at many levels and the factors that control the system at each level with a holistic view;

B. Elaborate on the importance of supply chain strategies, risks and mitigation tactics;

C. Examine a variety of inventory models and identify the planning techniques;

D. Explain lean operations and identify basic approaches to eliminate waste, remove viability and improve throughput;

E.. Elaborate on the strategic importance of maintenance and reliability, and implement preventive maintenance.
Method of teaching and learning 
This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures and tutorials/case studies.

1. Introduction


Factory Physics, Manufacturing Management, Design for Manufacturability, Operations Management, Three Dimensions of Global Competitions for Manufacturing Firms, Manufacturing Management Approaches, Science of Manufacturing, Process Structure, Product Process Matrix, History of Manufacturing and Scientific Management.


2. Supply Chain Management


Make-or-Buy, Outsourcing, Six Sourcing Strategies, Supply Chain Risk, Managing the Integrated Supply Chain, Building the Supply Base, Logistics Management, Distribution Management, Ethics and Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Measuring Supply Chain Performance


3. Inventory Management


Functions and Types of Inventory, ABC Analysis, Record Accuracy, Cycle Counting, Inventory Models, Independent Demand, Dependent Demand, The Basic Economic Order Quantity (ECQ) Model, Minimising Costs, Reorder Points, Production Order Quantity Model, Quantity Discount Models, Probabilistic Models and Safety Stock
