Aims
To introduce topics in Statistics and to describe and discuss the potential scope of their applications.
To describe the scope of the application of these methods.
Learning outcomes 
A. Describe statistical data.

B. Use the Binomial, Poisson, Exponential and Normal distributions.

C. Perform simple goodness-of-fit tests.
Method of teaching and learning 
This module will be delivered by a combination of formal lectures and tutorials.
Syllabus 
Introduction and description of data

Examples of what ‘Statistics’ as a discipline is about, populations and samples, graphical summaries, shape,location and spread of data.

Elements of Probability Theory

Intuitive meaning of probability, events, compound events, conditional probability and Bayes’ rule, networks ofunreliable components.

Probability Distributions

Discrete and continuous random variables: the probability mass function, the probability densityfunction and distribution function. Expectation and Variance.

The Binomial and Poisson distributions.

The Normal Distribution.

Approximations.

Statistical InferenceThe principles of hypothesis testing, the chi-squared test of goodness of fit, the chi-squared test of association,central limit theorem, Normal confidence intervals. "
