 Syllabus Introduction and description of dataExamples of what ‘Statistics’ as a discipline is about, populations and samples, graphical summaries, shape,location and spread of data.Elements of Probability TheoryIntuitive meaning of probability, events, compound events, conditional probability and Bayes’ rule, networks ofunreliable components.Probability DistributionsDiscrete and continuous random variables: the probability mass function, the probability densityfunction and distribution function. Expectation and Variance.The Binomial and Poisson distributions.The Normal Distribution.Approximations.Statistical InferenceThe principles of hypothesis testing, the chi-squared test of goodness of fit, the chi-squared test of association,central limit theorem, Normal confidence intervals.
