Aims
To provide a basic understanding of the principles of Classical Mechanics and their application to simple dynamical systems.
Learning outcomes 
After completing the module students should be able to analyse problems involving the motions of bodies under simple force systems, including:

1. Particles and particle systems.

2. Fixed axis rotations.

3. Rigid bodies (including geophysical applications such as the precession of the axis of rotation of the earth).

4. The two-body problem (the motion of planets, comets, and satellites).
Method of teaching and learning 
Syllabus 
Elementary principles of classical mechanics (particles, systems of particles, constraints). Lagrangian formulation of classical mechanics, Hamilton’s variational principle. Conservation theorems and symmetries; energy. Rotation about fixed axis. Motion in a rotating frame (Coriolis force, Foucault pendulum). Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics. Oscillations and normal modes. Two-body problem; Kepler’s laws of planetary motion. Rigid body rotation; Euler angles, inertia tensor, Euler and Lagrange tops, precession of the equinoxes.
