Aims
To provide a theoretical basis for the understanding of population ecology.

To develop mathematical models to simulate and predict the behaviour of biological ecosystems involving

(i) a single species, (ii) several interacting species
Learning outcomes 
A. Interpret the biological significance of the terms and parameters in a variety of population models of one species or several interacting species.

B. Analyse discrete-time and continuous-time dynamical models in order to predict future changes in an ecosystem.

C. Analyse how the behaviour of solutions of a model change as parameters are varied.

This module will be delivered by a combination of formal lectures and tutorials.

Single species systems: Fundamental balance equations.

Exponential growth.

Intraspecific competition.

Relationship between continuous and discrete-time models.

Logistic, Hassell and other models.

Explicit time delays.

Cycles and the onset of chaos.

Multi-species systems: Community matrix.

Stability diagram for two species systems.

Interspecific competition and Gause's principle.

Toy models, limit cycles.

Global stability, the theorems and functions of Liapunov.
