Aims
To provide the student the ability to select a suitable instrument and associated system for a given measurement application and to consider possible alternative solutions. To understand the principles of sensing and transduction operation and factors contributing to the measurement error.
Learning outcomes 
A. Understand the physical basis of some common electrical sensors;

B. Have a general appreciation of basic sensor specifications and their interpretation;

C. Understand the system requirements for a typical measurement system;

D. Have an appreciation of some common factors that can affect the performance of a measurement system;

E. Have an ability to use specific instrumentation to perform simple electro-mechanical tests on an electrical machine to evaluate its performance.
Method of teaching and learning 
This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and supervised laboratory sessions.
