Module Catalogues

Mobile Robots Design

Module Title Mobile Robots Design
Module Level Level 2
Module Credits 2.50

Aims and Fit of Module

The module aims to enable students to be creative in the design and to be able to evaluate results and synthesise knowledge. It provides a theoretical understanding of the design process of mobile robots, which is important to the programme.

Learning outcomes

A. Know basic concepts and techniques used within the field of mobile robotics
B. Demonstrate understanding of the knowledge on kinematics, sensors, actuators in mobile robot
C. Show knowledge of the fundamentals of vehicle localization and map building
D. Design and construct simple mobile robot systems

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
Lectures will be given on theory, programming and simulation in lecture hall. Seminars: university researchers and industrial experts will be invited to present the frontier progress in mobile robotics theory and applications.
