Module Title: Spanish Stage 1
Module Level: Level 0
Module Credits: 5.00
Academic Year: 2021/22
Semester: SEM1
Originating Department: Modern Language Centre
Pre-requisites: N/A
The module is intended for students who have little or no previous knowledge of the Spanish language and it will introduce the Spanish language and culture. The module will broadly achieve an outcome at level A1- of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The module aims:

• To provide students with the basic grammatical structures of the language and elementary skills in all four key language skills: writing, speaking, listening and reading.

• To introduce the culture, customs and society of Spain to help students develop an awareness of the cultural and social background of the language.

All the Spanish modules have been developed taking into account the QAA benchmark statements for a full or minor component in a language. QAA benchmark statements relate to the language component comprising at least one-third of the study total, resulting in students at the end of the relevant degree programme being at level C1. These Spanish modules make up less than one third of study and so the realistic minimum that would be achieved for a student starting at a beginner level in year 1 is CEFR B2, though students with some initial knowledge would be at C1.
