Module Level: Level 0
Module Credits: 5.00
Academic Year: 2019/20
Semester: SEM1/SEM2
Originating Department: English Language Centre
Pre-requisites: SPA003

Aims
The module is intended for students who have some previous knowledge of the Spanish language (A2- or equivalent) and it will progress in the study the Spanish language and culture. The module will broadly achieve an outcome at level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

• To consolidate and widen further the knowledge of the Spanish language, including grammar and lexis.

• To enhance communicative proficiency in Spanish, in both writing and oral (presentation and interaction).

• To develop further listening and reading skills.

• To broaden the knowledge of contemporary Spanish – speaking countries

• To develop intercultural awareness of Spain and Spanish speaking cultures.

All the Spanish modules have been developed taking into account the QAA benchmark statements for a full or minor component in a language. QAA benchmark statements relate to the language component comprising at least one-third of the study total, resulting in students at the end of the relevant degree programme being at level C1. These Spanish modules make up less than one third of study and so the realistic minimum that would be achieved for a student starting at a beginner level in year 1 is CEFR B2, though students with some initial knowledge would be at C1.
Learning outcomes
Students completing the module successfully should:

A Demonstrate a sound knowledge of some aspects of contemporary Spain and Spanish speaking cultures.

B Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the main Spanish linguistic principles, structures and registers used in various types of writing (essays, articles, media, adverts etc.) at an A2+ level.

C Discuss everyday aspects of his/her environment e.g. people, places, a job or study experience.

D Write very short, basic descriptions of events, past activities and personal experiences at an A2 level.

Method of teaching and learning
• Core teaching takes place through Spanish language and study skills workshops with an emphasis on student-to-student interaction and all student participation.

• In addition, there will be guided reading and directed study to enable students to prepare for and reinforce class input and develop autonomous learning strategies. Online resources will also be used to complement contact sessions and workshops whereby additional information and resources can be made available electronically and on-line discussions between students and tutors can be held.
Syllabus
• The development of the students’ language skills (reading, writing, listening, spoken production and interaction) will be integrated into a framework focussing on various aspects of contemporary Spain and Latin America (culture, politics, everyday life, gastronomy, social issues, etc).

• Course book materials will be supplemented with multimedia resources available online.
