Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to equip students with knowledge and skills needed in the professional translation world. It gives students intensive training in translating a wide variety of technical documentations from English to Chinese and vice versa, in particular instructions, technical manuals and bidding documents. The module is essentially practical in that it concentrates on translating representative material through regular home and class assignments. The use of computer-aided translation tools will be taught in this module.

Learning outcomes

A. grasp key concepts involved in technical translation;
B. conduct text analysis in terms of genre and/or register;
C. translate non-literary texts from English into Chinese and vice versa; 
D. use computer-aided translation tools.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and Workshops).
Lectures introduce students to relevant theories involved and skills used in the translation of professional texts;
Workshops train students in the use of translation skills and provide students with hands-on practice of translation of various non-literary texts. The interactive approach will be adopted in class teaching.
