Aims and Fit of Module

Build on existing conference interpreting skills acquired in ENG204 and develop skills further to cope with more complex source materials;
Equip students with the skills to use interpreting booths and specialised interpreting software
Develop the students' awareness of the problems likely to arise when interpreting consecutively and simultaneously and provide them with the opportunity to deploy their skills making appropriate use of interpreting strategies and procedures to solve them;
Develop the bilingual terminology appropriate to multiple domains;
Develop the intellectual and analytical insight to be able to confront the ethical challenges that may arise when working as professional interpreters.

Learning outcomes

A. demonstrate knowledge of interpreting studies in an international conference context ; 
B. show awareness of various interpreting skills including anticipation and paraphrasing;
C. develop one’s own effective system of note-taking for consecutive interpreting;
D. compile a glossary for a certain subject;
E. demonstrate skills in simultaneous interpreting both with texts and without texts in general topics;
F. deliver interpretations effectively;
G. raise awareness and understand ethical challenges that may arise when working as professional interpreters.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and workshops), and will involve the following modes of teaching and learning: 
a. Lecture: introduce knowledge of interpreting studies and provide a platform for students to examine and to improve their understanding of conference interpreting
b. Workshop: practice on different modes of conference interpreting, such as SI with texts, SI without texts, consecutive interpreting with note-taking, and whispering interpreting.
