Aims and Fit of Module

This module is based upon the execution of a mini-project that is carried out by small groups of students. The individual projects to develop skills of analysis, interpretation and policy
prescription. It is well grounded in the Department’s own research activities and draws upon
established links with a number of local authorities and other public bodies.

Learning outcomes

A. Develop a deeper understanding for the organization of sustainable development initiatives
B. Adopt a critical approach to the examination of existing practice in the analysis and evaluation of planning and management
C. Apply skills in selecting, assembling, manipulating, presenting and interpreting data related to planning and management
D. Use skills of policy prescription based on these data
E. Show familiarity with some of the ethical issues that can arise in the relationship between client and consultant

Method of teaching and learning

The subject is taught on the basis of a client based project which the students select and fulfil.  Students will have the opportunity to develop and discuss skills and critically evaluate their activities as environment and planning practitioners through tutorials and the process of responding to the project.
