Integration of Energy Strategies in the Design of Buildings

Module Title Integration of Energy Strategies in the Design of Buildings
Module Level Level 4
Module Credits 5.00
Academic Year 2024/25
Semester SEM1

Aims and Fit of Module

To develop the necessary skills to analyze and design in an integrated manner utilizing strategies for energy saving systems in Buildings
To develop the theoretical knowledge in the area of energy consumption in Buildings
To develop the theoretical knowledge the different energy profiles in different building types, housing,Commercial, Public Buildings, Hospitals etc
To develop an understanding of the structural assessment of Energy rating systems like LEEDS,BREEAM,PassivHaus, the differences in the levels of ratings and underlying policies
To develop an understanding of interplay and energy balance between ventilation, insulation, function, occupant satisfaction and airconditioning in buildings
To develop theoretical and practical knowledge of energy production systems in Buildings
To develop theoretical and practial knowledge of energy demand reduction in Buidlings
To classify energy demands accoding to function in Buildings (electricity consumption, heating, mechanical systems for ventilation or movement etc)

Learning outcomes

A. Synthesize theoretical and practical issues related to the integration of passive and active energy systems in buildings and develop appropriate strategies for their integration.
B. Present theoretical knowledge of Sustainability Rating Systems (LEED, BREEAM, etc)
C. Argue analytical knowledge of appropriate selection of materials for buildings and energy systems of buildings in an integrated manner.
D. Analyze and present the impact that energy systems have in the lifecycle of buildings
E. Argue and calculate energy demands stemming from functions in buildings.
F. Integrate active energy systems in new and existing buildings.

Method of teaching and learning

Series of Lectures and seminars where strategies and examples are presented discussed and analyzed. Site visits to buildings where energy systems play a crucial role, along with guest lectures by experienced (external) professionals in the field. Also examples specific to strategies using software will be demonstrated
