This module develops advanced research literacy for design practice, equipping students to critically engage with theory, methods, and interdisciplinary enquiry. Through iterative exploration, students will formulate original research questions, design robust methodologies, and synthesize knowledge to inform ethical, creative, and contextually grounded design research. The module emphasizes critical reflection, bridging academic scholarship and professional applications.
A. Critically evaluate a range of research tools, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks relevant to architecture, urban design, and industrial design, assessing their applicability in both academic and professional contexts. B. Formulate challenging and original research questions by synthesising knowledge from design theory, socio-spatial studies, and contemporary industry practices, aligning them with a relevant design project or academic inquiry. C. Develop a structured research programme, including aims, objectives, and scheduled activities, demonstrating self-directed learning while adhering to academic and professional conventions D. Apply appropriate research methods in specific design contexts, critically engaging with philosophical, social, technological, and urban influences on design practice. E. Critically assess the impact of design research in both academic and industry settings, evaluating how theoretical and practical insights shape built environments, products, and user communities. F. Produce original, well-argued written and/or design research outputs that integrate theoretical, contextual, and methodological insights, complying with academic and professional standards
This module is delivered through interactive seminars, fostering discussion and providing critical feedback on the coursework development.
