Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to prepare students to enter the BA China Studies programme. It will introduce the students to the three major thematic and disciplinary areas in China Studies: Chinese Culture & History; Chinese Society & Social Change; Chinese Politics & Economy. The students will gain understanding of the disciplinary distinctions inherent in the study of China and the relevant interdisciplinary approaches to link thematic areas. The module will also provide students with a broad introduction to the study skills and learning practices necessary to study Humanities and Social Sciences.

Learning outcomes

A. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the disciplinary foundations of China Studies as an academic pursuit. B. Identify the major areas of research and learning within China Studies, as well as the links between them. C. Demonstrate basic academic writing skills in English appropriate to the discipline, including structuring a short argument with evidence. D. Demonstrate understanding of core learning practices and techniques in the Humanities & Social Sciences.

Method of teaching and learning

Each week will contain one lecture/seminar block. Across the thirteen-week semester, the lecture programme is delivered in two integrated strands: a China Studies content strand of seven lectures and tutorials, which introduces the three thematic pillars of the degree — Chinese Culture & History; Chinese Society & Social Change; Chinese Governance & Economy —and an academic-skills strand of six sessions, which develops the core scholarly practices of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The skills sessions will build on the reading materials of the China Studies strand to deepen students’ engagement with the material. In addition, reading tutorials will be provided by colleagues from the Academic Literacies Centre, helping students develop English language capabilities.
