This module provides an introduction to the major elements of Chinese civilisation and to the scholarly literature devoted to Chinese thought, religion, and worldview in general.
A. Have a clear understanding of the intellectual, literary and religious developments that characterize Chinese civilization.
B. Be able to identify the great works of Chinese philosophical and religious literature and appreciate them in a comparative perspective.
C. Be familiar with the overall contents of the Confucian classics and their influence on traditional Chinese society.
D. Understand what conditions led to the rise of China’s characteristic cultural developments.
E. Develop an appreciation of how traditional Chinese thought influences the present-day worldview of the PRC.
F. Be aware of the principal debates in the academic literature about Chinese literature, religion and philosophy.
