Aims and Fit of Module

This module provides an introduction to social development in the PRC and to the social science literature on both social development generally, and in the PRC.

Learning outcomes

A. Have a clear understanding of the main drivers and dimensions of social change in China.
B. Understand the determinants of social policy and the variations over time.
C. Be aware of the principle debates in the academic literature about social development.
D. Develop an understanding of the social policy making process.
E. Understand the impact of economic policy and economic growth on stratification and social development.
F. Have developed an understanding of the regional factors of social development, and their variability.
G. Be critically aware of key social development concepts such as community, inequality, progress.
H. Have an understanding of the breadth and depth of the international China Studies literature on PRC society and development.
I. Work collaboratively in a research project that aims to develop the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to empirical cases.
J. Demonstrate a capacity for independent research, including through formulating and answering a research question.

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures and seminars for rehearsal of weekly topics
