Aims and Fit of Module

To understand the evolution of social policy in China through an examination of theories and ideologies influencing it, to then carry out an analysis of such policies.

Learning outcomes

A Understand the dimensions of social policy in the Chinese context;
B Analyse the impact of Confucianism and Communism on the development of China’s social policy through their conceptions of social justice;
C Compare and contrast China’s social policy with other theories and examples of the welfare state, including particularly the East Asian welfare model;
D Consider the consequences of the introduction of market mechanisms during China’s reform era for conceptions of social justice and welfare entitlement, and their impact on social policy;
E Interrogate the process of social policy legitimization during the reform era;
F Identify the main targets of China’s social policies and explicate China’s major welfare programmes;
G Carry out problem-centred policy analysis and be able to formulate policy alternatives

Method of teaching and learning

Seminars for rehearsal of weekly topics; project work including preparation and presentation of an essay, as well as seminar participation. Teaching and learning is through the medium of English, and no knowledge of Chinese is required
