Aims and Fit of Module

To understand the roles of gender in the contemporary Chinese society and the sociology of China

Learning outcomes

A. Understand the changing gender norms and complex roles women filled in the Chinese society
B. Understand the various scholarly debates that assess the PRC’s record on women’s rights and gender equity
C. Understand the changing legal status of women under the Marriage Law
D. Understand how men and women’s rights and obligations were socially and legally structured through the Household Registration system;
E. Understand women’s social mobility and marriage
F. Understand how migration affects women and households in rural and urban China;
G. Understand the impacts of China’s population policy on women
H. Understand the changes and status quo of women’s political participation, employment and education
I. Understand debates on changing sexuality and sexual mores in contemporary China
J. Understand changing definitions of masculinity in China today

Method of teaching and learning

This module is taught across the semester through lectures for rehearsals of weekly topics and seminars for presentation and group discussions. The project is now a more focused series of tasks including class participation, essay preparation, seminar presentation and research essay.
