Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this Year 1 module is to prepare students for study on the BEng Civil Engineering and BEng Architectural Engineering programmes. The module aims to introduce students to the historical context of the Civil and Architectural Engineering disciplines from antiquity to present, as well as to introduce the fundamentals of the engineering design process and communication methods.

Learning outcomes

A.Understand the process of ‘engineering design’ and its various stages of implementation.
B.Understand how the most common engineering sketching and drawing methods are used to represent concepts and objects.
C.Demonstrate familiarity with the basic terminology and sustainability and moral principles used in engineering practice.

Method of teaching and learning

The module is delivered through formal lectures and associated tutorials.
Students may be provided with language/study skills support from the English Language Centre (ELC) to help them engage with module content. Some sessions on this module may be delivered by ELC tutors, with the aim of assisting students with language/study skills requirements for the module.
