This module aims to introduce the factors which influence the selection of materials for engineering purposes, to develop understanding of the properties of these materials, and to lay a foundation for subsequent design work.
A. Assess the factors influencing the selection of the most appropriate material for a particular civil engineering purpose.
B. Compare the manufacturing processes, physical/mechanical/engineering properties of widely used construction materials such as aggregate, concrete, masonry, and timber.
C. Judge the most relevant test method used to evaluate the performance of a given construction material considering the application of a particular material and the availability of test standards.
D. Design a concrete mix proportion considering given requirements and restrictions.
E. Analyse a set of experimental data to produce a quantitative/qualitative conclusion and hence to evaluate the properties of the given material
The material in this module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures and practical sessions.
