Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this module is to equip students with an understanding of basic chemistry, laying a foundation for students to pursue further study in chemistry.

A Understand and discuss structure and properties of the main-group elements in the periodic table
B discuss the nature of chemical bonding and the geometry of molecules
C discuss the significance of chemical equilibrium
D understand simple rate equations and the importance of reaction kinetic in determining reaction mechanisms
E discuss reactivity of organic compounds with respect to their functional groups
F discuss fundamental properties of general thermodynamic terms Gibbs free energy and entropy
