Aims and Fit of Module

(1) to equip students with the basic quantitative transferable skills required for level 1 (year 2) Chemistry degree programme. (60% of module) (2) to equip students with general transferable skills with a focus on communication. (40% of module)

Learning outcomes

A. Quantitative key skills:
a. Simple calculations as required in analytical chemistry and the basic idea of a derivative and an integral for use in physical chemistry
b. The representation of data via graphs, particularly straight line graphs, and the manipulation of data in spread sheet programs for data analysis
c. The basic algebraic manipulation and functions needed for kinetics, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics
B. General key skills:
a) Safe operation in Laboratory environment
b) The principle for chemical literature search
c) Communication skills for chemists
d) General knowledge of chemistry in society
