Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to provide students with an overview of Chinese grammar such that they can understand and teach grammar at L2 Chinese level. It will also prepare students with pedagogical knowledge on preparing and presenting effective teaching plans.
To equip students with practical skills, this module offers a solid platform for Chinese language teaching and grammar teaching.

Learning outcomes

A Show familiarity with key aspects of Chinese grammar and develop a sense of the major linguistic properties of Chinese grammar.
B Demonstrate an ability to define and sequence syntactic structures in L2 Chinese instructional materials.
C Design effective tasks and learning activities in Chinese grammar teaching.
D Demonstrate an ability to teach Chinese grammar according to the characteristic of learners' native languages.

Method of teaching and learning

Teaching consists of one seminar and one lecture per week. Lectures are used to introduce key aspects of Chinese grammar and demonstrate teaching approaches in L2 Chinese grammar. Seminars are typically oriented towards applying knowledge learned in the lectures to teaching practice. Students will practice planning and presenting their teaching in the seminars.
