Aims and Fit of Module

The module aims to introduce students to advanced research methods in communication research. It will be crucial in helping students write their Master's Thesis. It covers fundamental concepts in communication research design, sampling strategies, data collection and data analysis. With a focus on qualitative and quantitative research methods, the module provides guidance to students on appropriate method selection and the interpretation of research findings attained through data analysis. It also introduces sociological and ethnographic techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, focus groups and the data analysis approaches of discourse analysis and qualitative content analysis.

Learning outcomes

A Have the advanced ability to critically employ research methods to address communication problems, both theoretically and empirically.
B Identify the essentials of research design and steps of doing communication research.
C Be able to practice state-of-the-art data collection techniques in the field.
D Be able to organise and correctly prioritise data to reach specific conclusions.
E Clarify and illustrate research findings and identify their implications.

Method of teaching and learning

In lectures, students will be familiarised with social science research standards and will then be asked to apply these to their own research tasks. They will present some of the findings to the class during seminars; in order to do so, they will engage in actual and virtual library searches and data collection and analyses.
