Aims and Fit of Module

This Module will present the basic theories and concepts of health and economic development and will demonstrate how health and development are inextricably linked. The sociocultural, politico-economic and ecological factors involved in processes of health and development will be examined in this module.

Learning outcomes

A Examine the relationship between health and economic development.
B Critically appraise the concept of a deterministic relationship between economic growth and population health.
C Analyse and reflect on the concept and discourse of “poverty”.
D Assess the ways in which economic development can be harmful to human health.
E Differentiate normative development from sustainable human development.
F Critically evaluate the intended and unintended consequences of development interventions on population health.
G Plan recommendations for economic development interventions that will improve population health.
