Aims and Fit of Module

Students will be introduced to Chinese health care and the Chinese health care system from its inception in the Republican Period to the present. The successes and challenges of China's historical and current health policies, campaigns and reforms will be critically examined.

Learning outcomes

A Analyse historical health care in China from the Republican Period to the present.
B Assess the important influences in the development of, and reception to biomedicine during the Republican period.
C Critically appraise the importance of health care developments during the early PRC.
D Examine how rural health reform in the early PRC served as a template for a global health care agenda.
E Appraise the success and failure of health reforms in 21st century China.

Method of teaching and learning

Lecture, discussion, tutorials, demonstrations, field visits and videos.
