This module focuses on infectious disease epidemiology. A series of lectures aim to develop student awareness and deepen their knowledge about the main principles of infectious disease epidemiology. These include but may not be limited to the following topics: an overview of key principles and different methods used in the study of infectious disease epidemiology; the role of vaccination; new and emerging infectious diseases; the different modes of disease transmission; and mitigation strategies. The seminars series will discuss real-world scenarios, providing students an opportunity to be actively engaged in discussing, critical thinking and problem-solving current infectious disease concerns.
A Explain and apply the key principles of infectious disease epidemiology
B Discuss, apply and analyze key infectious disease epidemiology methods
C Understand, determine and assess the role of vaccines in infectious disease epidemiology
D evaluate and assess the importance of existing, new and emerging infectious diseases
E Determine the importance of the different modes of transmission of infectious disease and mitigation strategies
The lectures will be delivered primarily via lecture-based instruction supported by technology and accompanied by appropriate handouts Students will be guided by specific sections of the textbooks, peer-reviewed articles and/or other relevant resource materials. Seminars will provide students an opportunity to develop their presentation/communication skills and analytical/synthesis competencies, whereby students will be present case studies for specific infectious diseases and different mitigation strategies. Students will also engage in pedagogical activities that will help promote individual learning, group learning, and inquiry-based learning.
