Aims and Fit of Module

This module is focused on power generations and utilizations technology and the applications of emerging technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) and big data technology in smart grids. This module closely reflects the recent development of modern power systems and should equip students with necessary backgrounds on the field. This module aims:
• to introduce thermodynamic theory and its application in thermal power plant technologies;
• to introduce the working knowledge of thermal power plant systems;
• to introduce various types of thermal power generation and other power generation technology;
• to develop an awareness of the sustainable power generation and utilization in smart grids.

Learning outcomes

A. understand basic thermodynamic principles by applying them to thermal power generation;
B. be familiar with the principles of energy analysis applied in thermal power plants
C. have a working knowledge of how a typical thermal power plant systems work;
D. have an appreciation of environmental, social, economic impact of power generation and utilization in smart grids;
E. have a working knowledge of different applications of power generation and utilization technology in smart grids.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials, research seminar and site visit sessions.
