Aims and Fit of Module

To understand the general philosophies of power system protection, especially its objectives, affecting factors, classification and principles of application.
To understand necessary basic knowledge for power system relay protection, as well as operating features and analysis methods.
To introduce students different methodologies of protection for different protective objects, including generator protection, transformer protection, line protection, bus protection and pilot protection, etc.
To make students aware about the effects of protection for power system security and stability.

Learning outcomes

A. Master the general philosophies of power system protection and relations with the future expected smart grids.
B. Comprehend basic power system protection equipment with corresponding methodologies.
C. Design protection solutions for specific engineering problems and perform corresponding calculations.
D. Analyze given protection systems to identify defects and develop solutions.
E. Perform further study and academic research in topics related to power system security and stability.
