Aims and Fit of Module

This module introduces students to the notion of leadership practice that focuses on three elements: leading self, leading others and leading change. This module is designed to bring students up to date with the latest research and thinking in the arena of both leadership studies and leadership development. The subject is approached in two key ways; by engaging with relevant ideas and theories in the area through reading and thinking about published academic research; and, by carefully examining theory into practice by looking at how leadership development happens in organisations and to individuals, through education, training, and personal development practices. The main aim of this module is to help the student become a better leader, and to prepare them to embark on a path of personal leadership development in their entrepreneurial futures.

Learning outcomes

A Explain and critically analyse the concepts of leadership and management and their application in an organisational, social, environmental and multicultural context; B Cultivate a sense of self-awareness through identifying leadership vision, mission, style and values C Explain and evaluate the role of leadership and management development in enhancing and developing organisational competence D Critically evaluate their personal leadership practice E Demonstrate a deep understanding of the most important aspects influencing communication.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a series of key lectures/seminars. In addition, students will be required to work within study groups and analyse studies in leadership, examining both successful and unsuccessful leadership styles. Each week, there will be discussion of relevant examples and of leaders and leadership, and guest speakers when available
