Aims and Fit of Module

The module provides students with the theory and practice of technology transfer and commercialization. It provides students with an insight into the working knowledge and skills needed to plan and implement technology assessment, including market assessment, alignment of technology in technology transfer and the transmission process. Finally, it provides an understanding on the issues concerning roles of various intellectual property rights, patent search, sustainability and competitive advantage, science and technology policy, start-up, and licensing and spin-off companies.

A Critically apply appropriate mechanisms of technology transfer and commercialization B Demonstrate understanding and assessment of customer-needs driven technology specifications, technology alignment, and the technology transfer process C Assess technology licensing agreement and be able to evaluate start-up and spin-off companies D Demonstrate recognition of the importance and role of intellectual property rights, governments, and commercial institutions in technology transfer and commercialization

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Teaching will be conducted using problem-based learning, with problems embedded in the lectures. General transferable skills are developed through the presentation of written and oral reports.
