Aims and Fit of Module

To develop students' skills in carrying out an independent research project through designing and executing a research work by conducting lab and/or field work, or using comparative information and databases.

Learning outcomes

A. Identify research questions related to environmental science, and produce an independent review of academic literature relating to specific research question/s
B. Design and carry out a research project to answer the research question/s, including using appropriate methods and research strategies to collect and analyse primary and/or secondary research data
C. Produce a written research report using an appropriate academic style and structure, including the techniques and approaches required to present research data
D. Demonstrate time- and project-management skills, including the ability to coordinate and complete the stages of a project independently by given deadlines
E. Demonstrate the ability to do a public presentation about a research project, in an appropriate academic style and structure

Method of teaching and learning

This module will extend over two semesters. Individual research projects can be based upon a laboratory or fieldwork exercise, or the use of comparative information and databases. Each project will be supervised by a member of academic staff.
Students will carry out their projects following a timetable, with supervision of all laboratory/field work by academic staff or TAs if applicable. The supervisor will meet regularly with the student to discuss progress, and will provide feedback on drafts of the assessments. Students will report their project in poster and oral presentations, and complete a preliminary report and a written thesis.
