Aims and Fit of Module

Blockchain technology is rapidly changing the global economy. It is widely applied in digital currencies, digital payments, crowdfunding, settlement of securities transactions, and smart contracts. This module aims to explore what a blockchain is and how you can create a simple one with Python codes. It explores cryptocurrencies, one of the most successful uses of blockchain. The up-to-date regulatory policies are also covered. The module will present technical concepts at a high level suitable for students whose main interest is finance and the financial applications of blockchain.

Learning outcomes

A Explain the basics of distributed ledger technology and blockchain.. B Critically assess the potential applications of blockchain, especially in within the field of finance. C Critically explain the development of cryptocurrency market. D Critically analyse the how cryptocurrency is used within the market. E Assess the risks associated with adopting central bank digital currency. F Understand the current regulatory policies.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be taught using a combination of lectures and lab/practical. Learning will be reinforced by appropriate readings from both the textbook and topical articles in the financial press.
